Wineries :: Vitis Hincesti
Vitis
Hincesti Winery
European varietals from Hincesti are deeply rooted in the soils
of Moldova.
Yet in 1812 Russian Tsar Alexander I invited French colonists to
come to Moldova and produce wine on leased territories. Moldovan
winemaking and viticulture received a major impulse at the end of
the 19th century upon the arrival of French vintners who came to
Moldova after their own vineyards had been destroyed by phylloxera.
Many settled on the hills of Hincesti, continuing century old winemaking
traditions and building beautiful chateaus to remind them of those
left behind. Vitis Hincesti is proud to present its product lines
featuring fine wines produced in strict adherence to traditions
using modern French and Australian technologies.
Vitis
Hincesti is one of the oldest existing Moldovan wineries. It is
well known to the western wine connoisseurs thanks to the success
of Kirkwood Chardonnay produced here. The winery was started by
Manuc Bei, the attendant to the Turkish Pasha and the Russian Tzar,
who delivered the best local wines to a wide range of destinations
across Europe.
Nowadays, Vitis Hincesti is a winery featuring state of the art
modern equipment and the only one in Moldova certified to produce
VDO and VDOC wines equivalent to the French AOC (Appellation d'Origine
Controllee). The winery is among the first in Moldova to start producing
organic wines.
